Barking Dog is a weekly two-hour folk and roots show on CKUW.

Barking Dog is hosted by me (Juliana Young) and produced by Dylan Bodner. The show began in 2018 after we noticed how little of the music we listen to receives regular airtime on commercial stations. Barking Dog has developed a following of like-minded listeners over the years, and I now have a master’s degree in Folklore, which I pursued because of my interest in the cultural traditions we highlight on the show each week.

While we play lots of mid-century folk revival recordings and contemporary roots music, you’ll also hear lumbering songs, sea shanties, fiddle tunes, traditional and contemporary Indigenous music, old and new blues music, rural brass band recordings, gospel quartets, fife & drum blues, early country music, prison work songs, popular songs from the turn of the century, children’s songs, union songs, play songs, poetry and spoken word historical pieces, bluegrass, parodies of folk songs, African blues music, Bahamian rhyming songs, as well as eclectic field recordings from around the world and right here at home.

I have no doubt that if you listen long enough—even if you’ve never been a big fan of “folk music”—you’ll find something you like. Whether you’re a longtime folk fan or just discovering the origins of today’s music, we’re here for you each week. All you have to do is tune in.

Thursdays, 2–4PM CST on CKUW 95.9 FM in Winnipeg.
